PARTNERSHIP WORKING

******************************************

At the start of the Covid-19 Pandemic in March 2020, local organisations including Assist, volunteers, and Dawlish Town Council, all came together to form Helping Dawlish.

Initially set up as an emergency response offering practical support to help local people cope with the lockdown, it is still in place and working to support people today. Visit the Helping Dawlish website for more information.

When the country was experiencing lockdowns and other restrictions, our trained staff delivered homecare and we co-ordinated the volunteer response to the Helping Dawlish initiative of supporting the vulnerable or those shielding by shopping, medication collections and more.

So much was achieved, and volunteers also supported us to do this work by helping with administration, delivering leaflets and raising funds by setting themselves lockdown challenges. For more information about what went on in those difficult times, please click here.

In the recent past, we were part of ADVICE TEIGNBRIDGE which was formed in 2013 through funding from the Advice Services Transition Fund. The partnership was successful in providing up-to-date and accurate debt, benefits and pathways advice for people throughout the Teignbridge area through interaction of the community, voluntary and local groups, charities and others. Partner organisations included:
We continue to offer benefits advice to the over 65s through our Community Support Project but advice on any issue is available through Citizens Advice Teignbridge. This link takes you to their website where you can get immediate and direct help on any issue.
Alternatively, contact them by phone on 03 444 111 444.

Last year we received a MAGIC LITTLE GRANT through LocalGiving. The donor was the Postcode Local Trust, a grant-making organisation funded by the People's Postcode Lottery. This helped support our Befriending project through 2022/23.

Supporters

We are very grateful for the continued support of Devon County & Dawlish Town Councils, and the many local businesses who provide raffle prizes and support our fund-raising events. In recent years we have been named as charity partners of both Sainsbury's Dawlish and the Co-operative Food store in Dawlish, which has raised magnificent sums for us.

During the pandemic, several wonderful people set lockdown challenges or started initiatives to raise money for us. More information is here.

In 2022/23 the Mayor of Dawlish, Cllr Lisa Mayne, included us as one of the charities to benefit during her mayoral year. The picture shows her presenting the cheque to our Manager, Shirley Fewings, in May 2023. Thank you, Lisa, for your fantastic support.

This Charity is at the heart of the community, providing a range of services to those in need. Organisations can support us by being members; £10 a year keeps you informed of our activities, enables you to send a representative to our General Meetings and your involvement helps ensure that our development is community-led. Complete this form and come in to see us with your cheque!

Collaborations

As well as our ongoing involvement with Helping Dawlish, we work closely with other local charities, supporting their activities and taking part in joint fund-raising events. Two charities we have particularly close links with are:

East Teignbridge Community Transport Association, (known locally as Dawlish Community Transport) which provides community transport, Ring & Ride services, and Shopmobility from its base in the Barton Hill Car Park, Dawlish; and

The Strand Centre, a community venue providing a wide range of activities and the Inspire Café in the centre of Dawlish.

We also support the activities of Dawlish Action for Youth, which provides leisure and recreational facilities in an informal setting for local young people.

Following the flood events in Dawlish in February 2014, we were pleased to be able to help the displaced and other affected individuals by co-ordinating the volunteer support effort and being a central point for offers of help and donations of goods.

We also assisted Devon Community Foundation, working with them to assess the ongoing effects of the floods on those people affected, to enable grants to be made from the Devon Flood Relief Fund.
