The King's Award for Voluntary Service

We are honoured and thrilled to receive the KAVS in respect of our wonderful volunteers who go above and beyond to provide the services of our Community Support Scheme. Announced on the King’s birthday, 14th November 2023, the KAVS is the highest award a local voluntary group can receive in the UK and is equivalent to an MBE.

Covid lockdowns and beyond

We co-ordinated the volunteer response to the Helping Dawlish initiative of supporting the vulnerable, or those shielding, by shopping, medication collections and more. So much was achieved, and volunteers also supported us to do this work by helping with administration, delivering leaflets and raising funds. For more information about what went on in those difficult times, please click here.

We are based in the Manor House, Old Town Street Dawlish, EX7 9AW and can be contacted on 01626 888321. The office is manned Monday - Friday 9am-5pm, except when we are out on visits. Please leave your name and number on our answerphone and we will get back to you as soon as we can. Our Volunteer Co-ordinator is Chrisi Marshall and she would be delighted to hear from you!

You Can Make a Difference!

Have you recently moved into this area and want to get to know people? Become unemployed or newly retired and have time on your hands? Have skills which are currently unused? Do consider volunteering - it's an ideal way of making new friends, while at the same time gaining experience, new skills and interests.

Opportunities available in this area are many and varied depending on the amount of time you are able to give and what your interests are. In return you can receive training, the chance to experience new challenges and at the same time have the satisfaction of knowing that what you are doing is making a difference to the lives of others.

Volunteering is something that anyone can do, whether you are young or old, male or female, employed or unemployed, disabled or able-bodied. We can offer advice and support and a wide range of volunteering opportunities. Come in and talk to us! But if you prefer to browse opportunities online, the new Devon Connect website highlights volunteer opportunities and you can search for local availability.

We are also seeking volunteers for our flourishing Community Support Project, which provides support for those in Dawlish, Teignmouth, and the surrounding areas who are isolated through their inability to go out and socialise, or experience difficulties with day-to-day living because of their limited mobility, frailty and/or sensory problems.

The type of help provided includes befriending visits, accompanying people on shopping trips and to leisure facilities, gardening, assistance with a hobby, and assistance with re-ablement. Our volunteers' input makes a profound impact on the lives of those they help.

If you have some time to spare, even just an hour or two a week, please contact Chrisi, our Volunteer Co-ordinator, on 01626 888321
or email

This service is provided completely free of charge.
We rely on grants and donations from supporters to cover our costs.

Volunteering generates "feel-good" factor too - it feels good to be appreciated. Other benefits recorded by our volunteers include:

“The work place is a very social place. As someone who has retired now, I feel that working as a volunteer fills that void and replaces that sociability aspect that I so miss”

“My own life has been enriched by meeting people who have led such interesting lives”

Our Volunteers say ...

“I just want to be part of the Community – to help others”

“I found out about the Volunteer centre at an event on the lawn in Dawlish and wanted to get involved. I wanted to volunteer as I have a horror of wasting the precious commodity of TIME. So I signed up!”

“I like to bring a smile to people who would otherwise be isolated”

“I just feel that there are too many people who see nobody maybe for days at a time. I love the elderly- they have so many stories to tell so I thought maybe I could spare say two hours per week of my time to hopefully brighten up someone’s day”

“I volunteer to in some way repay the help given to me and my late husband by a volunteer”

“To help other people and to get involved with other people as I live alone and like other peoples company”

"My experience of volunteering has really put me in touch with all that is happening in Dawlish and beyond. I have made a lot of contacts, widened my experience and feel that I am starting to fulfil a worthwhile role in this community"
